In 2004, Israel has suffered a serious incursion of locusts that has reached biblical magnitude. This swarm of hungry vegetarian gourmet devastated a significant amount of vegetation, leaving very little in their wake for human consumption. The locust was readily approved for human applications and various recipes have been made to educate the public on how to prepare these creatures for food.

Swarms of locusts can cover 100 km from a well in the field. They are usually distributed geographically through the wind. A locust can consume only two grams of plant life everyday. What you get is a million locusts can eat as much food as 5,000 people a day. It is not unusual for a locust to eat their own weight in food daily. These insects scoff at anything that will grow and can strip every bit ‘of vegetation in an area when attacking.

About 70 percent of this large family of insect eats certain species of plants. Locusts, however, are considered general feeders who crave a very wide array of plants.

Locust as a food has never caught on as a delicacy, but was used mainly to feed the impoverished people in many third world countries. To make Tinjiya you must first remove the hind legs and wings of locusts. Boil in a small amount of water until they are soft. Add a little ‘salt and spices to taste. Now fry until they are golden brown.

Another recipe you can try is Sikonyane. This is a recipe Swazi and takes only a few preliminary steps. Start preparing some coals to roast the whole locust. Be sure to remove the various body parts such as wings, head and legs as you eat only the breast of the insect.

An interesting note is that the locust can be roasted in small fine powder. This powder will keep for locust extremely long time periods and can be used in survival situations.

In Cambodia, the chefs will have several dozen locust adults and stuff a peanut slit in the abdomen of the insect. They will then grill the locusts in a wok and add oil and a pinch of salt. Be careful not to overcook the insects.

A very tasty recipe is to barbecue the locust. Prepare your charcoal as you would any barbecue. Place about one dozen locusts on your spit can be sure of hitting each of them through the abdomen. Keep in mind that many of these skewers would be required for each person. Place the finished skewers on the grill hot and turn constantly to avoid burning the locusts. After that it should be golden brown.
